Oro Station, Ontario – Tyler Hawn emerged from Saturday’s OSCAAR Race for the Cup event battered and bruised, but not defeated. Hawn was on his way to a birth in the final round of the OSCAAR Race for the Cup championship when a fuel pickup problem ended his day.
“With 10 laps to go we were running fifth. I came out of turn four and the car went flat like it was running out of fuel. I thought we were out of gas,” Hawn said. “My guys worked hard to get the problems resolved. We put fuel in it, tried messing with the carburetor, we thought maybe it was the fuel pump too. We didn’t end up getting back out.”
Back at the Hawn Motorsports team’s Oro Station shop they discovered the fuel pickup had come off the bottom of the fuel cell and prevented any fuel from making it to the power plant on the Fox’s Bakery/Atlantis Bath Centres No.2h.
“I changed the setup, put some weights and jammed some foam in there so it can’t happen again. It’s frustrating because, honestly, I would be in the top three in points right now,” Hawn said.
His day was also marred by a number of incidents that were beyond his control and hindered what would have been a top=five run. Hawn suffered damage to the radiator in the front end and will require at least a new front bumper.
“We didn’t have very good qualifying efforts. We were super fast in practice. We made some changes and it didn’t work out for us,” Hawn said. “We had bad heats. If I didn’t start mid-pack, I wouldn’t have been in the middle of the wrecks.”
“Every wreck was right in front of us and I had nowhere to go,” explained Hawn. “It was a nightmare.”
Hawn still managed to come out with a top-10 finish, but is disappointed with the result after building his expectations entering the race. Nonetheless, he hopes he can regroup during a non-points race at Full Throttle Motor Speedway in Varney, Ont. on September 10.
“I went in to it too hard on myself, wanting to make the top three. We were so fast in practice. I was running 13.27secs laps,” Hawn said.
“We’re running Varney this weekend, so that should bring some fun back in to it. We’re running the Sunset show on the 25th if all goes well at Varney. I want to be there for all my sponsors, but especially Fox’s Bakery.”
Hawn was beyond happy with the support he received from his team at the track on race night which enabled a strong effort through the start of the night.
“My guys worked hard all day. We changed the gears three times. In the pits, every time I came in, they were hustling their asses off. I have to give a huge thank you to them,” Hawn said.
