Innisfil, Ontario – After taking the lead just past halfway, there was no stopping Rick Spencer-Walt en route to winning the Spring Velocity at Sunset Speedway. It marks his second straight victory after May 12.

The veteran was solid in Saturday’s pair of qualifying heats, picking up a fifth and a fourth.

Following the re-draw for the main event, Spencer-Walt started off Monday in fifth. He escaped the contact between the leaders on Lap 2 to move up a spot to fourth. He continued to slowly climb forward, passing Josh Stade for third at Lap 12. He made his next move at Lap 30, giving Ryan Kimball a bump-and-run to move into second.

The first caution of the event flew at Lap 42 for a spin further back in the field. On the restart, race leader Nick Goetz broke, allowing Spencer-Walt to inherit the top spot with 34 laps to go.

The second half of the race didn’t prove easy, as Spencer-Walt fought off Gord Shepherd on the first restart, followed by holding off another past Sunset Speedway Champion in Dwayne Baker on a pair of restarts. He played his hand well, though, leading the rest of the laps en route to victory.

“I watched those guys take off right off the start, turning sideways, running into each other. These are 75 laps, not 20 laps,” Spencer-Walt said in victory lane. “I don’t think I got to wide open till I seen Baker. I didn’t want him to beat the old car so I put the pedal down and was driving it a bit harder. The sun came out and it changed the track a bit, I think, and I made a brake bias adjustment inside the car and man, it took off.”

Spencer-Walt added there was no worries with the back-to-back restarts.

“We gained the respect of these guys,” he said. “Maybe not in the way all the time, but I think they know if they drive into my door, I’m going to move them up the track and go by them in the next corner if I get the chance. So if they’re going to hit me, they better take off.”

This Saturday at Sunset Speedway marks the first APC Auto Parts United Late Models of Ontario Tour event of the season. As announced pre-season, this year for Spencer-Walt Motorsports includes running a limited late at Sunset and a pro late with APC.

Spencer-Walt will be back behind the wheel of his familiar Limited Late Model on June 3 at Sunset Speedway, set for the third night of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series competition. It is also fan appreciation so be sure to show up early, and get an autograph.
