Thorold, Ontario - Two first time champions were among the many honorees as the Merrittville Speedway Kart Club celebrated the 2015 Lucas Oil Weekly Karting Series Season Sunday November 29th at rural Thorold’s Club Castropignano.

The first of the first time Champions was Joshua Hansen of Vineland who won his first Superior PetroFuels Performance Manufacturing Junior Restricted Point Championship with 12 wins resulting in 776 points.

Hansen was unable to attend the event as he was competing in a race at the Georgia Karting Komplex in Carnesville, GA.

In the Wilder Racing Engines Performance Manufacturing Senior Animal Division, Dylan Culp of Niagara Falls also won his 1st career title winning 5 features and totaling 738 points.

Tucker Wood of Stevensville was the first of two repeat champions. Wood’s 13 wins in 15 starts led to 780 points and his 2nd straight title in the RCM Racing Equipment Performance Manufacturing Junior 1 Division.

The 2015 Season had Wood ‘Racing for Rainbows’ in memory of his friend Alivia Vanderklei who passed away at 4 ½ from Neuroblastoma Cancer. From race winnings, matching funds from his sponsors and donations from family and friends – an approximate $1,000 donation was made to Alivia’s Rainbows, a foundation that helps families dealing with pediatric cancer situations.

Welland’s Dalton Slack also earned his second straight Ed McPherson Construction Performance Manufacturing Junior 2 Division Title - winning 10 features over the season tallying 768 points.

Merrittville Speedway’s youngest group of karters – the Vansickle Pet Valu Novice 1 and Tim Phillips Garage KC Auto Parts Novice 2 Divisions received Competition Awards, as they do not run for points. Hayden Klager, Logan Illife, Hana Rothwell, Cohen Corbett, Madelyn Goulding, Sam Bolduc, Aiden Lavallee, Owen Kaiser, Noah Kugler and Spencer Maytum were all presented Competition Awards.

Merrittville Speedway’s Kart Club Member Drivers shared in the more than $10,000 in cash point fund and prize awards.

15120202cAll of Merrittville Speedway’s 2015 Member Drivers in attendance were eligible to win an Invertor Generator donated by Briggs & Stratton and the winner of the $ 800 prize was Novice 1 Competitor Hana Rothwell.

The Member Driver Draws also included prizes from Performance Manufacturing, Slack Karts, RCM Racing Equipment and Burris Tire with Cohen Corbett, (combined Novice 1 and Novice 2), Joey Priestley, (Junior 1), Kyle Phillips, (Junior 2), Randy Giroux, (Junior Restricted) and Ashley Moore, (Senior Animal) all winning Body Kits.

A number of Specialty Awards were handed out and the winners are listed as follows.

Most Improved Driver Awards: Madelyn Goulding and Cohen Corbett (Glendale Pet Valu Performance Manufacturing Novice 1), Jesse McKeown (RCM Racing Equipment Performance Manufacturing Junior 1), Shane Keagan (Ed MacPherson Construction Performance Manufacturing Junior 2) and Nathan Boisvert, (Superior PetroFuels Performance Manufacturing Junior Restricted Flat Head).

RCM Racing Equipment Sportsmanship Awards: Aiden Speck (RCM Racing Equipment Performance Manufacturing Junior 1), Davis Grocott (Ed MacPherson Construction Performance Manufacturing Junior 2), Sophie Horton (Superior PetroFuels Performance Manufacturing Junior Restricted) and Dylan Culp (Wilder Racing Engines Performance Manufacturing Senior Animal).

Jamie Werstroh was presented the Crew Chief of the Year Award for his efforts behind his son Austyn’s second season in the15120202b Junior Restrticted Division.

Lesley Elmer of Ridgeway was presented the Race Director’s Award. Although not an ‘Official’, she has been a long-time employee – working behind the scenes Tuesday Night in addition to Saturdays.
