Zack Meyer took 7th place in race 1 at Mid Ohio.

Lexington, Ohio – It was a solid start to a tough doubleheader weekend for Canadian Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires driver Zack Meyer, who today fended off almost all challengers on his way to a seventh place finish in the 40-minute sprint race in the Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio. Tackling the scenic yet tricky Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Meyer put in a brave effort to bring his #2 TMR/DAMIS PARTNERS III/Innisfil Indy Karting/Xtreme Coil Drilling car home after a race-long battle.

The 21-year-old from Innisfil, Ont., started the day off by qualifying in seventh position, a somewhat disappointing start to the day after finishing practice in fifth place and beginning the session placed in the top five. However, with a heavy downpour taking place before the race, it looked like the luck of Indianapolis could reappear in the rolling hills of Ohio. With rain having brought Meyer his career-best finish of fourth in the Grand Prix of Indianapolis sprint race, it looked like Meyer could repeat those conditions once again. However, the rain stopped, the track quickly dried, and the field took the green flag all shod with dry Cooper Tires.

It wasn't all bad news for the up-and-coming driver, though. Even with damp and slick conditions at the start of the race, Meyer was able to make a great start yet again and move past Axcil Jefferies into sixth. From there, the battle was on. Meyer was at the lead in a train of cars, with a series of drivers nipping at his heels for the duration of the race. As the track dried, though, Meyer began to pull out a slight gap over Scott Anderson. As the race wore on, Jefferies went on a charge, reclaimed seventh, and was able to pressure Meyer into a small mistake with four laps remaining, claiming sixth and leaving Meyer to finish the race in seventh.

"I made a pretty good start," Meyer explained after the race. "I tried to stick with the leaders early but they quickly built a gap. From there it was just a matter of managing my tires and trying to keep everyone behind me. I thought I had it under control, but just made a slight mistake there at the end and lost the spot. Now I just have to go out tomorrow and make an even better start and try and put it on the podium."

The sole Canadian racing in Indy Lights still has the 60-minute feature race to tackle this weekend. The grid for the feature race will be set by the second fastest lap each driver set during qualifying. As such, Meyer will start tomorrow's race in ninth place. The second race of the Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio is slated to take the green flag at 11:55 a.m. EDT on Sunday. The television broadcast of the doubleheader weekend will air on NBC Sports Network on a tape-delayed basis on Sunday at 6 p.m. EDT, immediately after the Honda Indy 200.
