Oakland, Ontario – The Miska Trailer Factory sponsored cars of Karl Sault, Brad Herron and Alex Schuts returned to action on Friday night at Ohsweken after rain interrupted their outing one week ago.
Karl Sault had the best night for the Oakland, Ont. based team in his Great Lakes Brewery/Waterous Holden No.81 Thunder Stock. Sault started 20th for the 20-lap main event and marched all the way to second-place finish.
“The car felt great. I was running the middle line and the car was sticking. If there was a hole, I could take it,” Sault said of his podium finish.
Just seven laps in to the race, Sault had already climbed to ninth and one lap later was situated fourth for a restart. He battled at the front with Ryan Dinning and Jim Lampman for the top spot. It was a drawn out battle, but Sault ultimately took the second spot from Lampman with two to go and settled for the runner-up spot behind Dinning.
“I went a little too hard and the car pushed up the track,” Sault said of his last lap pass attempt on Dinning. “I saw Jim Lampman underneath me after and we raced in to three and four and I came out ahead of him. It felt good being back up in the top three. It’s a good finish.”
Crate Sprint Car drivers Brad Herron and Alex Schuts also turned in positive performances. Herron claimed his third Top Gun award of the season in his Miska Trailer Factory/Climatizer Cellulose No.12 following his heat race win.
Come feature time, Herron started on the pole for the 20-lap main and finished fourth while Schuts drove from the 14th starting spot to 11th. Another top-five finish is a positive result for Herron, who is in the midst of a tight points battle atop the championship standings. However, he would have preferred his first win of the season.
“We just over adjusted. I saw a bunch of dust coming off the track and automatically anticipated the track was going to be slick. It was in spots, but for the most part it still had a bunch of grip,” Herron explained. “We tightened up too much, so lesson learned.”
After a flip two weeks ago and a broken drive shaft during last week’s rain-shortened event, Herron was happy nonetheless to come away with a strong finish.
“After we got it put back together, it’s as good as it was and maybe just a little bit better. It’s a silver lining on the horizon that we were able to pick up where we left off,” Herron said.
Schuts, meanwhile, ran as high as eighth throughout an intense three-car battle and settled for an 11th-place result at the end of the night.
“The car was the second best I drove all year, but I don’t feel like I have all the speed I need yet,” Schuts said. “I think I run okay lines and I think I hit it sometimes, but not all the time. When I lose it, I lose momentum. I still felt great. I was pretty happy with it.”
Schuts continues to focus on improving each night he unloads the Elastochem Insulation Extreme Spray Foam/Middleport Mechanical No.5. He’ll have the opportunity to continue his progression next week with two races in four nights. He’ll compete in Ohsweken’s Christmas in July event on Friday, July 22 before the Northern Crate Nationals on Monday, July 25.
“I’ve compared it to golf before and it still is: you’re racing against yourself,” Schuts reaffirmed.
The entire Insta-Insulation Motorsports team will be back in action on Friday, July 22 for Christmas in July and Autograph night. Visit www.ohswekenspeedway.com for additional event information.
