Oakland, Ontario – Karl Sault led the way for the Insta-Insulation motorsports team with a top-five Thunder Stock finish at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday night. Crate Sprint Car driver Brad Herron earned a pair of top-10 finishes in double features while Alex Schuts battled through some mechanical problems to a 13th-place finish.
Sault initially looked like he was going to fight his Great Lakes Brewery No.81 as well, but a red flag on lap three allowed him to go to the pits and make adjustments.
“To start off the feature it was super loose and I couldn’t control the car. On lap three when (Mike) Klazinga flipped, I was lucky I could come off the track and make some adjustments to the car. When we came back out, the car was really good,” Sault explained.
The track started out fast and tacky, but appeared to lose some of the grip come feature time for the Thunder Stocks.
“It was a slick track. But it was a smooth and slick track. Once you had the setup, it was great,” Sault laughed.
Sault sits second in the Thunder Stock point standings entering the final two points nights of the season. He isn’t going to stray from his usual preparation for his championship bid.
“We just go out there and do what we can. What happens, happens. We can’t control the future. It only takes one bad finish and it can go either way still.”
Crate Sprint Car Teams Battle On
Brad Herron led the way for the Crate Sprint Cars in the double 15-lap features, the first of which was a make-up for the July 8 rainout. He finished ninth in the first race before improving to eighth in the second aboard the Miska Trailer Factory/Climatizer Cellulose No.12.
Alex Schuts suffered a DNF in the first race with a fuel problem, but the issue was resolved in order for him to finish 13th in the second.
“In the second race I was way better, but I made some mistakes. I had the wing back too far and wasn’t getting the turn I needed,” Schuts said. “I really liked the track. It was drivable and I enjoyed it.”
After a partial rainout on August 5 and a complete rainout on August 12, all the drivers were eager to get back behind the wheel on Friday night.
“You miss it, so I liked being back in the car,” Schuts said. “You get working on the cars and you get them dialed in then you have to take a week and a half off.”
The Crate Sprint Cars will return for another pair of double 15-lap features this Friday, August 26. Schuts hopes the extra track time in the same night will help him earn a career-best finish that would compliment his rookie season.
“Better than a top-eight would be nice. That’s where I want to be. I had a top-eight car one night and then I wrecked. I had a really good car that night,” Schuts said, adding he’s learning to be more aggressive in his Insulthane Extreme/Middleport Mechanical No.5.
