Toronto, Ontario – Tomas Casas and Stacey Nesbitt find themselves in familiar territory heading into this weekend’s season finale for the Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Once again the two teenage stars are battling for a championship.

The pair comes to CTMP tied for the lead in the Brooklin Cycle Racing Pro Rookie of the Year Award standings with 92 points apiece. The top Rookie Pro point scorer in this year’s final Mopar CSBK standings receives the first prize of a drum of high quality Sunoco Race Fuel from series spec fuel supplier BCR of Pickering, Ont.

The 16-year-old Casas and 18-year-old Nesbitt have been making a habit of battling each other for national road racing titles. Last season they finished 1-2 in the Bell Helmets Amateur Sport Bike class with Peterborough, Ont.’s Casas taking the title by just 13 points.

Before that they were stars in the development Honda CBR250R National Race Series. Nesbitt, from St-Lazare, Que. won the title in 2012 while Casas placed third. He then went on to take the Honda crown in 2013 while Nesbitt moved up the racing ladder.

Rookie Pro points are awarded based on finishing position in Pro Superbike races. Although Casas and Nesbitt are tied in the standings, Casas currently holds the tiebreaker thanks to a higher race finish heading into this weekend’s pair of races at CTMP. He has placed sixth at two events, Autodrome St-Eustache and Atlantic Motorsport Park, on his Parts Canada / Peterborough Cycle Salvage Yamaha YZF-R6, while Nesbitt’s best race results with the Statoni Racing / Honda Canada Honda CBR600RR have been a pair of ninths at the same venues.

“The Brooklin Cycle Racing Pro Rookie of the Year Award is designed to bring some well-deserved attention and publicity to the top first-year Pro riders on the national scene,” said Rob Egan of BCR. “It’s a tough step to go from the Amateur to the Pro ranks. The financial commitment is greater and the competition level is greatly increased. It takes a lot to excel in this environment and it is easy to get discouraged.”

The BCR Rookie Pro Award is open to riders competing in the Mopar Pro Superbike class who have not run in more than four Pro events in any previous year. Eligible competitors for the 2015 prize are required to attend at least four of the five series venues.

Behind Casas and Nesbitt, BMW S1000RR rider Reiner Griese is third in the BCR Pro Rookie standings with 52 points. The Wellington, Ont. resident has a top finish of 10th from the most recent event at AMP.

Last year Schomberg, Ont.’s Marco Sousa took the BCR Pro Rookie of the Year Award on his Z1 Cycletech BMW S1000RR.

This weekend’s action at CTMP opens on Friday with qualifying for all national classes, including the Magneti Marelli SuperPole shootout in the Pro Superbike class. Feature races run on Saturday and Sunday.

Brantford, Ont.’s Jordan Szoke is trying to lock up his 10th Canadian Superbike crown and complete a perfect season in the Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship with seven wins from seven races aboard the Mopar Express Lane / BMW Motorrad BMW S1000RR.
