Mirabel, Quebec - Scott Steckly driver of the 22 Racing/Canadian Tire Dodge in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 continues to post top five finishes at Circuit ICAR. This was a record setting event as it would be the first time in series history that a race event went the entire distance under green flag conditions.
Practice issues unrelated to the 22 Racing Team caused Steckly to miss out on a quick lap session. Practice number one was almost 15 minutes late starting while practice number two was cut short when a car went off the track. Steckly would manage to post the 7th quickest time. “We had just put on some new tires and changed a few things but didn’t get a chance to test them out with practice ending early,” said Steckly. “We will see how it goes in qualifying – hopefully we can get the Canadian Tire Dodge closer to the front for tomorrow’s race.”
Qualifying would follow Saturday afternoon and Steckly again posted the seventh quickest time which would line him up on the inside of row four for the start of the 30 lap Ecko Unlimited 100.
The race pace was very quick during the first half of the event and Steckly settled into the seventh position and opted to wait for opportunities to move up in the running order. The field of cars gradually started spreading out as the race continued under green flag conditions. Steckly was able to move past two competitors in front of him over the 30 lap race but without any caution periods to tighten up the field he settled for a fifth place finish. “I said before the start of the race that a top five would satisfy me, but as a driver you always want to win,” said Steckly. “We have such great road course driving talent in the field now it is very hard to win one of these things. But it was another good point’s day for us and we now head west to Edmonton and Saskatoon and I have had a good deal of success at those facilities.”
Steckly continues his string of solid finishes at Circuit ICAR where in four events he has finished in the top five three times with two of those being seconds and his worst finish being a seventh. With this finish Steckly remains in third in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 point standings but the top three positions have tightened up considerably.
The annual Western swing starts next Saturday at Edmonton International Raceway with the second of two events on the following Wednesday at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway in Saskatoon.
