DJ Kennington and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team looked to wrap up the western portion of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series schedule by building on their solid result over the weekend in Edmonton. However contact during the race at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway in Saskatoon on Wednesday night with an exuberant young competitor would get in the way of that plan.
During afternoon practice Kennington had the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge up near the top of the time sheets. "As expected we were strong right from the get go" said Kennington. It wasn't the best qualifying lap posted by Kennington and he would start the 250-lap race from the ninth position. "I just missed a little bit," said the frustrated driver.
Kennington quickly had the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge moving forward after the drop of the green flag and was into the top five before lap 15. The series veteran stayed within striking distance of the front of the field as the race reached the midway point with changing conditions. "The wind picked up, clouds came in and the temperature cooled down so the car tightened up a bit," explained the driver.
During the scheduled caution period for service the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge crew gave the driver new tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment to resume the race.
With inclement weather looming things got aggressive on the track and there was contact on the backstretch between several competitors. Kennington and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge suffered the deepest wounds.
"It got a pretty intense and not everyone was being respectful," said Kennington. "There's a lot of good drivers in the series, and the #59 is a young guy with a fast car but he got carried away. We had a car that could run up front but instead we had to spend a lot of time making repairs just to try and finish," he added.
The #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team was forced to bring the car behind pit wall for significant front-end repairs just to get back on track to finish as many laps as possible. They were scored 16th at the end.
After six races DJ Kennington sits sixth in the overall championship standings.
