September 4 2015
Edmonton, Alberta - There are always mixed feelings when the month of September rolls around. When the calendar flips it means that Fall is just around the corner and that another season of Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series race action will soon be coming to an end.
Dating back to the very first season, a total of 44 NPP Series events have been scheduled at six tracks in the month of September. Sadly, thirteen of those scheduled events never saw a green flag fly thanks to inclement weather. The 2004 season was a disaster for scheduled September races. Four consecutive race dates, over three weekends, were cancelled due to rain which saw NPP Series officials actually extend the race season into the month of October for the first and only time in NPP Series history.
One September race in 2007 was cancelled after four inches of hail pounded race teams before an event. The good news is that September weather has been extremely kind to the NPP Late Model Series since the infamous 'hailout' in Edmonton. Only two September race events have been lost due to weather since then. So far the extended forecast is looking favorable for the 2015 championship weekend at Central Alberta Raceways on September 11th and 12th.
A total of 15 different drivers have won Feature events in the month of September since the first season. Current point leader Darrell Midgley was the last driver to add his name to the list of September winners. The Sidney, British Columbia driver swept the 2014 season championship weekend in Rimbey, Alberta last year in his Integra Tire(Edson) #14 Dodge.
Midgley currently has a 53 point lead over defending season champion Mark Miller from Calgary, Alberta. Both Midgley and Miller have the opportunity at becoming just the third driver in NPP Series history to win a second championship. Midgley won his first NPP Series championship back in 2009. After a rough start to the 2015 season, Miller is on a roll heading into the final two races of the 2015 season.
The driver of the A1 Autobody #69 Chevrolet finished second and scored his first Feature win of the season last month at Central Alberta Raceways. In only four starts, Miller has an average Feature finish of 3.3 in Rimbey, Alberta. Midgley meanwhile has eight starts at Central Alberta Raceways and has an average Feature finish of 6.6.
