Mirabel, Quebec — Alex Labbé finished a fighting second at ICAR this past Sunday, in the Ecko Unlimited 100, the fourth race in the 2016 NASCAR Pinty’s Series. After putting the best car on the track and watching Alex Labbé push the leader very hard throughout the race, the Can-Am/Kappa/Cyclops Gear/Lou’s Barbeque team is proud of the race result, even if a second victory in a row would have been great.

Alex Labbé started from pole position and led the first lap of the race in the Can-Am Ford Fusion No. 32. He lost the lead going too fast into the first hairpin turn at the start of the second lap. His car went a little wide halfway through turn 1 and eventual winner Andrew Ranger slipped inside of Alex and kept the lead all the way to the finish.

Alex then proceeded to put pressure on the leader while managing his tires to make sure the car would still be quick in the closing laps. In fact, Labbé closed up to 0.883 sec adrift of the winner when the official threw a yellow flag for debris in the first turn on lap 22 of 30 in the race.

This scuttled all the hard work done by Labbé so far and forced him to restart his planning for the pass to gain the lead. The restart on lap 29 did not help Alex, as racers behind him tried to push him wide at the exit of turn 1. The Can-Am driver fought them off and maintained his second place but had now lost three seconds to the leader instead of being right off his rear bumper. “I had been chasing the No. 27 for the entire race and things were going well until the Yellow came out. Now after the restart I was almost 3 seconds adrift of the leader with fewer than 10 laps left to close the gap and pass him. The Can-Am Ford Fusion No. 32 was still the best car on the track so I knew I had what it took to win our second race in a row.“

But it was not to be, and one could see the frustration on Alex’s face after the race. With only 5 laps remaining, Labbé drew away from the pack behind him and started to close on the leader. “I cannot say for sure what would have happened if the late-yellow flag had not come out, but I am convinced the Can-Am car had everything to win. We simply ran out of laps to get it done!” explained the driver. Alex Labbé is now 3rd in the 2016 drivers standings, only 7 points behind the leader with eight races left in the season.

The Can-Am/Kappa/Cyclops Gear/Lou’s Barbeque team will be heading to Toronto for the 5th race of the season that will be held on July 16, 2016.

The race will be broadcast on TSN (4 & 5) on Sunday, July 10 at 1 PM as well as on RDS 2 on Saturday, July 23rd at 2 PM.
