Caistor Centre, Ontario - The Team Turner Racing Sprint Car drivers had a rough weekend spent partly on the road, and they’re looking to bounce back with several home track races coming up this week.
The Turners - Jamie and sons Cory and Ryan - and teammate Havard Daniels were back at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday. Cory finished 2nd in his heat race, while Ryan was 4th, Havard was 5th, and Jamie was 6th. The 20 lap feature began on a sour note as Jamie flipped in turn three and was done for the night. Cory raced in the top 5 and eventually brought home a 5th place finish, while Ryan went to the pits for adjustments and recovered to finish 14th, and Havard took a 16th place finish.
“Rough night for TTR," noted Ryan. "Cory had a very strong run once again, but the rest of the team struggled. I tried to make changes under the caution to make the car handle better, but it didn’t seem to help much.”
Jamie's car suffered too much damage on Friday, so only Cory, Ryan, and Havard entered Saturday's Patriot Sprint Tour event at Brockville Ontario Speedway. All three drivers started and finished their heat races in the same positions - Cory won his heat race from the pole, Ryan finished 3rd, and Havard finished 2nd. Cory drew the 7th starting spot for the feature and was advancing toward the top 5 when his #97 suffered engine problems and forced him out of the race. Ryan moved up from his 11th starting spot, but fell back late in the race to finish where he started in 11th. Havard drew the 8th starting spot and ended up finishing 14th.
“Felt like we had a solid finish tonight," Ryan said after his BOS debut. "The car started to go away late in the race and caused us to drop out of the top ten, but I'm happy with our first run at Brockville ever.”
Cory's engine problems at Brockville and Jamie's crash at Ohsweken left only Ryan and Havard to compete in the final race of the team's triple-header weekend at Cornwall Motor Speedway. Ryan moved up from 4th to 3rd in his heat race, while Havard improved from 8th to 7th. Ryan started 13th and was moving toward the top 10 when he got off track, and eventually recovered to finish 13th. Havard fought an ill-handling car and ended up finishing 22nd.
“We had a blast driving the fast, banked bullring of Cornwall," Ryan exclaimed. "It was a very racy track with a top and bottom. The driver made an error in getting it off the top of corners three and four and falling back to 18th. With a mid-race caution, I was able to regain composure and battle back.”
The team will be back in action this week with races at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday, Monday, and Tuesday. The Friday, July 22 event at Ohsweken is one of two autograph nights scheduled this season, and is also the track's annual Christmas In July night. Two feature races are on tap for the team, as the 360 Sprint Car division will run a regularly-scheduled event, plus the postponed race from July 8. Make sure to come visit TTR and pick up an autograph card!
The Northern Nationals on Monday, July 25 at Ohsweken will include NASCAR star Kasey Kahne and other invaders racing against TTR and the rest of Ohsweken's weekly 360 Sprint Car teams.
The Six Nations Showdown on Tuesday, July 26 at Ohsweken features the World of Outlaws Sprint Car series, with some of the best drivers in the world set to make their annual visit to southern Ontario.
The team heads into the weekend with Cory 2nd in the Ohsweken championship standings, while Ryan is 7th, and Jamie is 9th. Three points-paying feature races over four days at Ohsweken are sure to play pivotal roles in deciding the 2016 championship.
