Stirling, Ontario – The Go Nuclear Late Model Series completed its fifth season of competition last month at Brockville Ontario Speedway with another thrilling finish. Charlie Sandercock claimed his second series championship when the final checkered flag fell.

Three different drivers went to victory lane during the 2016 season. Charlie Sandercock was the most successful driver with five wins, nine top-5 finishes and completed every race in the top-10. Brandon Mowat secured a total of three victories, including his first with the tour at Humberstone Speedway in July. John Waters also claimed a pair of wins.

In total, 78 different drivers competed with the Go Nuclear Late Model Series in 2016 and 10 drivers competed in 90 per cent or more of series events. While Sandercock claimed the series title, Mowat finished second with his trio of victories along with six top-5 tallies. Phil Potts wrestled third in the standings from Kyle Sopaz while Auburn, NY native Chris Fleming was fifth in the standings.

The season kicked off back on April 24 at the Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon, NY where Waters of Whitesville, NY held off Hornell, NY native Bryce Davis to earn the opening night victory at the Prelude to the Gnome Cup.

The series returned to Utica-Rome on May 22 for the Gnome Cup, but the event was postponed until August 14 when rain fell with three laps complete in the main event.

Action resumed on June 25 at Brighton Speedway where Sandercock scored the win at his home track, the first of five on the tour in 2016. Sandercock took the checkered flag again eight days later on July 3 at Cornwall Motor Speedway when he fended off Adam Turner and Potts.

A doubleheader weekend to end July took the Go Nuclear Series to Humberstone in Port Colborne, Ont. where Mowat led all 30 laps for his first career series victory. The next night, series drivers made their second ever visit to Ohsweken Speedway as part of the Northern Crate Nationals. Waters dominated the 25-lap showdown on the big 3/8-mile for his second tour win of the season.

A six-week layoff followed Ohsweken after the rescheduled Gnome Cup at Utica-Rome was also rained out on August 14. It allowed teams to prepare for the busiest weekend of the year in mid-September.

The Series visited Mohawk Internatonal Raceway in Hogansburg, NY for the annual Mohawk Nationals on September 16 and 17. Mowat went to victory lane for the second time on Friday night before Sandercock earned his third victory of the year the next evening. The series suffered its second rainout of the season when rain interrupted racing at Weedsport Speedway following heat races on September 18.

One week later, the series’ biggest race of the year took place at Brighton Speedway with the 65-lap, $6000-to-win Great Crate Race on September 24. Sandercock was once again the class of the field after taking the lead from Sopaz midway through the race to secure his fourth win.

Sandercock echoed the feat a week later when he passed Fleming late in the 50-lap race at Fulton Speedway to earn his first career win at the Fulton, NY track and fifth Go Nuclear Series triumph of the season.

The season came to a close two weeks later at Brockville’s Northeast Fall Nationals. Another thrilling finish saw Mowat lead every lap after taking the top spot from polesitter Dale Caswell. Mowat capped the best season of his career with his third tour win while Sandercock officially sealed the title with a second-place finish.
