Caistor Centre, Ontario – Team Turner Racing made its first trip south of the border to compete at Fulton Speedway on Friday night. Cory and Ryan Turner both travelled to compete with the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints at the high-banked Central New York track’s season opening Highbank Holdup.
Cory and Ryan Turner raced in the same heat against the 41 cars in attendance at Fulton. It was a tough heat race against some of the night’s most talented drivers with only the top-five finishers in the 10-car heat qualifying directly to the main event.
Cory raced from the fifth starting spot to third to claim a spot in the redraw that would determine the top-12 starting spots.
“We had a really good car,” Cory explained. “I could really turn it early and then it wanted to stay down on the tires. I could get a good run and there was some good moisture out of turn two and turn four.”
Meanwhile, Ryan turned in a seventh-place finish and was forced to the B-Main.
“We were not expecting the track to be that slick early in the night and this early in the season,” Ryan said. “I was missing my marks and just couldn't seem to make the car stick.”
The B-Main provided a tough challenge for Ryan with only the top-two finishers set to transfer to the main event. Ryan sat third for most of the race and made a bid to challenge the top-two, but they had distanced themselves too far from the rest of the field. Ryan settled for fourth, ending his night.
“Between the heat and the B-Main, we went to get some help from Cory who was strong all night,” Ryan said. “He definitely pointed us in the right direction. The crew did a great job making the changes. We couldn't go as far as we wanted in a short amount of time between races. I think we could have had a chance to transfer, we just needed to settle down and roll the middle a bit better.”
Meanwhile, Cory was lucky in the redraw and pulled the pole starting spot on the 26-car field for the 25-lap main event. Outside polesitter Chuck Hebing jumped to the lead early ahead of Cory, but he raced to maintain the second spot until Danny Varin moved to the runner-up spot on lap 12 following a lap eight caution. Turner ran third the rest of the race while outdueling Bryan Howland for the final spot on the podium.
“I was really happy with how good the car was,” Cory said. “It just needed to be a little bit tighter. We’ll work on that going forward.”
Both drivers will take their early-season experience on the hard and slick Central New York as valuable date for the team’s notebook. Both drivers plan to race regularly in the Empire State this season where track’s are done for being smooth, but dry slick.
“This was great slick track experience that our team needs,” Ryan said. “When we run into a track like that again, we already know what we want to do. It was also, a great opportunity for more seat time.”
Team Turner Racing will next be in action on Friday, May 5 at Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, OH with the NRA Sprint Invaders, weather dependent. All three cars will then be in attendance on Friday, May 12 for Ohsweken Speedway’s Test and Tune before the track’s 22nd season opener on Friday, May 19.
