Brighton, Ontario - Phil Potts and the Fowl Mood Race Team returned to their usual form after a mechanical problem last week and earned a second-place finish in his Vanderlaan Building Products/Brighton Recycling No.29 Pro Late Model at Brighton Speedway on Saturday night.

Potts started on the pole for the 30-lap Feature and ran second for most of the race after a battle with current division point leader Charlie Sandercock.

“It was still tight,” Potts said of his car and the issue he’s battled most of the season. “Down low it will turn fine, but the track was too fast for that. You had to be able to run the high line and it just wouldn’t turn up high for me, not like it should.”

While Potts naturally would have preferred earning his second victory of the season, he was happy to solve the motor issue he’s fought this season.

“There’s not a scratch on the car and I have all my engine issues worked out now, so I’m extremely happy about that,” Potts explained. “The motor is flawless now. It was all due to jetting and carburation.”

Throughout the main event, Potts was also engaged in a spirited battle for the second spot with Andy Mayhew. It was the second time in the last three weeks the two drivers have had an extended stint jockeying for position.

“His program has come along by leaps and bounds,” Potts said of Mayhew. “I raced with him lap after lap, two weeks in a row, and he was hard to beat. I can race with him door-to-door and not worry about being slammed by him. It was great racing with him.”

As Potts enters the month of August second in Brighton’s Pro Late Model points with six races remaining in the season, he knows there’s absolutely no time left to waste in his chase to defend the track championship.

“It’s push hard every single lap now. There’s no more waiting for 10 laps to get going,” Potts said. “It’s go right off the green. In saying that, you still have to protect what you have because a second or third is better than a tenth. The focus in my mind is that I have to go as hard as I possibly can, but I still need to bring the car home with the best finish.”

Potts is eager to get back to the track and built off his podium finish and seventh top-five of the season. However, he’ll have to wait a week to do so as the Pro Late Models have a week off before returning to action at Brighton on August 12.

“I wanted it, but now I don’t want it,” Potts said of the break. “I want to go. I was looking forward to it, but since we are figuring the car out, I want to race.”

Potts and his crew will use the extra week to perfect the No.29 for it’s return to action. Race time at Brighton Speedway on August 12 is 7:00pm. For additional event information, visit www.brightonspeedway.ca.
