Chris Steele, Aaron Turkey, James Thompson, Tyler Lafantaisie, and Gillian Hils took the feature wins as 107 drivers signed in to race on Styres Gas Bar Night at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday, May 30.
CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING 360 SPRINT CARS
Chris Steele and Mikey Kruchka started the 360 Sprint Car feature on the front row, and Steele began to open a sizable lead running the low groove early in the race. Kruchka maintained the second position, with Mitch Brown giving chase in third. The first 16 laps of the race were run without incident, and Steele lost some of his lead while negotiating traffic, but Kruchka couldn't get close enough to challenge for the lead.
Jessica Zemken brought out the only caution flag of the race on lap 16 when her right rear tire exploded, bunching the field for a 4 lap dash to the finish. Todd Hoddick had been using the high side of the track to gain positions before the caution flag, and was 4th behind Steele, Kruchka, and Brown for the restart. Steele opened a lead again, but Hoddick was the driver to watch as he was up to 2nd with two laps to go. Nobody could catch Steele though, as he claimed the third 360 Sprint Car feature win of his career, while Kruchka fought back and beat Hoddick to the line by inches. Mitch Brown and Glenn Styres rounded out the top 5.
Heat races for the 18 car field were claimed by Justin Martin, Dave Dykstra, and Shane Ross.
STRICKLAND'S GMC CRATE SPRINT CARS
Tyler Hendricks and Robbie General made up the front row for the Crate Sprint Car feature, but Kyle Durnin took the lead from General on lap 3. Durnin opened a lead, while Aaron Turkey took over the second spot, and 10th starter Jake Brown was on the move. Brown was in the top 5 by lap 4, and took third from General on lap 8, while Turkey began to reel Durnin back in, despite a bent front wing.
Paul Lang brought out a caution flag when he spun on lap 11, and erased what was left of Durnin's lead. Durnin was strong when the race restarted though, and stayed up front for the last 4 laps. Turkey crossed the line second, while Tyler Hendricks stole the third spot from Brown on the last lap, and General rounded out the top 5. Turkey's apparent runner-up finish turned into a win when Durnin's car was found to be slightly underweight in post-race technical inspection, while Ryan Hunsinger moved into the top 5 as a result.
Heat races for the 11 car field were claimed by Mike Thorne and Ryan Hunsinger.
AFFORDABLE TOWING & RECOVERY THUNDER STOCKS
Dave Bailey and Trevor DeBoer started the Thunder Stock feature on the front row, and Bailey led the first lap before Chris Dickie took over the lead on lap 2. A crash on lap 11 took several competitors out of contention, including Bailey. Opening night feature winner Wyatt Van Wart took the lead from Dickie on the restart, but B-Main winner James Thompson was on the move and took the lead from Van Wart with 5 laps to go. Thompson had started the race in the 11th row, while Dave Silverthorn, Jr. moved into the top 5 from 19th on the grid.
The race was stopped with 3 laps to go when Laura Hughes flipped in turn 2. She was able to climb out of her heavily damaged car uninjured. Thompson stayed up front to get his first Ohsweken win after the 3 lap dash to the finish, followed by Van Wart, Lee Winger, Silverthorn, and Dickie.
Heat races for the 35 car field were claimed by Lee Winger, Ryan Dinning, Dave Bailey, and Billy Bleich, Jr., while James Thompson won the B-Main.
HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Dave Goodacre and Mark Bazuin began the Mini Stock feature on the front row, but it didn't take long for Tyler Lafantaisie and Jason Lungaro to get to the front and fight for the lead. The race was stopped when Mike Taylor and Sarah Rutherford crashed hard exiting turn 4, with Taylor getting upside down. Both drivers were able to get out of their damaged cars with assistance from the safety crew, but Rutherford did go to the hospital for further evaluation.
Lafantaisie amd Lungaro resumed their fight for the lead when the race restarted, but Lungaro's car faltered, and he eventually dropped out of the race. A spin by Jamie Goudge brought about a dash to the finish, and Lafantaisie held off 17th starter Lee Hils by mere inches to get his first Ohsweken win. Hils settled for the runner-up spot, followed by Goodacre, Brandon Janssens, and Mark Bazuin.
Heat races for the 27 car field were claimed by Mike Evers, Brandon Janssens, and Jason Lungaro while Chris Ryckman won the B-Main.
GALE'S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS
Gillian Hils and Paul Longboat started the Bomber feature on the front row, and Hils was able to negotiate traffic and hold off 2013 champ Dusty DeBoer to get her first Ohsweken win. DeBoer settled for the runner-up spot again, while Thomas Booker, Ashton Reekie, and opening night feature winner Joe DeBoer rounded out the top 5.
Heat races for the 16 car field were claimed by Joe DeBoer and Lucas Smith.
