Bowmanville, Ontario - Performance Tech Motorsports produced two podium finishes, with all three of its drivers finishing the top six in Round 7 of Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Powered by Mazda on Saturday at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
Robert Alon finished third in the No. 00 entry for his third podium finish of the season. Austin Versteeg placed fourth in the No. 16 car.
Joel Janco finished sixth overall and second in Lites 1 Masters in the No. 25 Performance Tech car.
The 30-minute race had limited green flag racing and ended under yellow after multiple incidents.
Alon had a close call with the spinning car of pole sitter Matt McMurry on Lap 1 but steered clear to drive to the podium.
"It was greasy out there," Alon said. "The start was pretty interesting with people weaving and swerving. I was right with the top guys until I ran into McMurry spinning. He almost hit me, and I had to avoid him. I lost the gap and lost the draft, and that three-second gap held for the rest of the race. But overall it was fun. I just wish there would have been less yellow."
Janco powered to sixth overall and his fourth Lites 1 podium of the year. He qualified ninth overall.
"I saw a lot of crazy things out there," Janco said. "But it's great after Watkins Glen, where I didn't complete a single lap in two races, to be back on the podium. Thanks to Performance Tech for doing a great job."
Versteeg capitalized on other drivers' mistakes and stayed clean despite electrical issues.
"First I want to say thank you to all the guys for getting me going," Versteeg said. "I just kept my head down and tried to forget the situation we were in. I pushed to see what we could do with what we have. It didn't feel like we had full power, but we did. We got lucky. I got the car up in position and just held it and stayed clean. I dealt with the issues the best I could, and I can't say thank you enough to Performance Tech."
Team Principal Brent O'Neill was pleased with his drivers' performance but concerned with the number of on-track incidents throughout the race.
"Our guys did great, but that was not a good race," O'Neill said. "Austin had issues from the start. He had to keep the car's RPMs above a certain level or else it would shut off. He dealt with it the whole race and did great, finishing P4. Robert and Joel both did awesome jobs out there. It was good to see Joel on podium again after Watkins Glen.
"But they didn't have enough green-flag racing. This isn't the first race we've had some of these issues, and the same guys are making the same mistakes. I'd hate to see the competition suffer because of it."
Round 8, a 45-minute race, is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. (ET) Sunday, July 12. Follow live timing on scoring.imsa.com or on the IMSA mobile app for iOS, Android or Windows. Live text commentary is available on Twitter @IMSALive.
