Zeewolde, The Netherlands – It’s a track designed in a hilly environment in Saxony, barely 50 kilometres away from the Czech border, that young Montréal born race driver Kami Laliberté will challenge for his second weekend of the season as a German Formula 4 championship driver. At the Sachsenring, the Van Amersfoort Racing (VAR) team member will be on track Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 29 and 30 April and May 1 to take part in the three races that are on the program. This last week, while returning to his main duties at his school, the young Canadian hope has also been able to recall the best part of his first weekend on track, an honest 8th place finish on Sunday 17 April in his 2nd race disputed on the Oschersleben course, and put behind him the misfortunes he encountered during the two other races entered there.
‘’We’re always looking for the very best results and the best, of course, is being a winner. But in auto racing, there are always unpredictable events happening, including some bad luck. You may have a good car able to run at the front, but they can only run with the work of individuals working at their settings and others at the wheel. If only one individual and I include myself, makes a small mistake, things can turn wrong instantly. This is how I want to see what has happened at Oschersleben’’ said Kami, referring to the wrong tyre selection made for the first race disputed under the rain and the 3rd race multi-car shunt in front of his number 35 car; an incident that forced him to go off track and end his race in a gravel trap. Before these events, on Friday, recording twice the 6th best time of his group in qualifying, the Canadian driver was awarded the 11th spot on the starting grid for the 1st and 3rd races.
But as he already said at the end of his first weekend of the year, Laliberté remains quite confident, mainly because of the experience that he keeps gaining and the good settings on his single-seater. ‘’The team works well. They are very experienced in auto racing and they have a precious knowledge of the kind of power that this type of car can deliver. I’m also starting to have a good idea of what they can do on track. After all, I ran aboard some of them a good number of laps in France last year and a little more in Germany before this current season that started early in New Zealand. And before my first race weekend, I had good trials with VAR. I am watching, listening and I know there is still lot of learning ahead. But I am confident that I will get better results this coming weekend’’, added the driver.
Located on the outskirts of Hohenstein-Ernstatthal, in Saxony, the Sachsenring is 3.645 kilometres long and has 14 corners. It is well known as being the track of the German motorcycle Grand Prix. Another modern facility, it has replaced in 1996 a course draw every year since the 20s on the surrounding roads and streets of the town. The German Formula 4 championship drivers, including Kami and his team mates at VAR, are scheduled to be on track for free trials and qualifying on Friday, a race on Saturday and two others on Sunday.
