James Vance is aiming for another strong finsish for Compass360 Racing in Continental Tire Sports Car action at Kansas Speedway this weekend.
Vance climbed to 12th in the Street Tuner class standings after he and co-driver Jon Miller combined to finish eighth at the last event, May 24 at Lime Rock Park. To continue to climb the points this weekend, Vance plans to build a team strategy for the No. 74 Bionic Environments/ ExpoSystems USA Honda Civic Si around a style of competition more familiar to Kansas fans - stock car racing.
"I think we'll have to do a little bump-drafting," Vance said. "Both the 74 and 75 cars are going to have to pull some Ricky Bobby shake-and-bake moves to make Kansas successful because it's an oval. I believe we can pick up valuable points in Kansas if we keep our consistency. I think it will be very important that we work as teammates. You have to use teammates; you have them for a reason."
Kansas features a six-turn, 2.37-mile road circuit that uses almost all of the facility's 1.5-mile banked oval. Vance thinks the front-wheel drive transmission of his Honda Civic Si is well suited to this unique, fast layout.
"Kansas has a lot of high-speed track banking," Vance said. "Certain cars benefit more than others with that layout. For us, being able to utilize the high-speed track will benefit us more.
"I'll study Kansas on the simulator, but I've never been there before, and the closest thing to this track I've raced on is Daytona. There's a big difference, with Kansas using the whole oval. I'm excited, though. My goal is to land another top 10."
Vance will get on track for the first time during the event at 2:45 p.m. (CT) Friday, June 6, followed by another practice at 6:30 p.m. and qualifying for the ST class under the lights at 9:10 p.m. The green flag drops at 6:15 p.m. (CT) Saturday, June 7 for the 150-minute race, Round 5 of the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge
